William Raymond Hoag

William Raymond Hoag, 86, of 17 Churchill St. died Monday morning at home.
Born in Pittsfield on Oct. 23, 1918, son of Raymond Hoag and Laura Chase Hoag King, and the stepson of John Howard King, who raised him, he attended local schools.
He participated in the Civilian Conservation Corps.
A decorated Army veteran of World War II, he served from 1938 to 1945 and qualified as an expert marksman. He was a first sergeant with Company L, 101st Infantry in the European theater. In August 1943, he was cited for his outstanding performance of duty in action while stationed at Djebel Halfa, Tunisia.
Mr. Hoag had been employed by the Pittsfield Fire Department as senior fire alarm operator for 18 years, retiring in 1984. He also had been an upholsterer, specializing in antique furniture, for the former Jack Shea's Upholstery for 40 years.
He was a communicant of St. Mark's Church.
He was a member of Disabled American Veterans and the VFW. An avid reader, he also enjoyed gardening and bird watching.
He and his wife, the former Jean M. Small, celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary Jan. 5.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Dennis W. Hoag of Dalton; three daughters, Kathleen J. Hoag of Cambridge, Colleen B. Laviolette and Noreen H. Reu, both of Pittsfield; four brothers, Kenneth V. Hoag, John H. King, George T. King and Donald R. King, all of Pittsfield, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for William R. Hoag, who died Jan. 31, 2005, will be tomorrow, Feb. 3, at 8:15 from DERY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at St. Mark's Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be today, Feb. 2, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to UNICO Make-a-Wish, or to HospiceCare in the Berkshires, both in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201. Mr. Hoag leaves his son-in-law, Leo Laviolette Sr.; daughter-in-law, Diane Hoag; six grandchildren, Michael Reu, Brian Reu, Leo Laviolette Jr., William Laviolette, Matthew Hoag and Lindey Hoag, and three great-grandchildren, Michael Reu Jr., Samantha Reu and Patrick Reu.
He was predeceased by a sister, Helen Russo, and a brother, Harold King.
