Mary T. Smith

Mary T. Smith, 86, of 97 Bromback St., died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born in Pittsfield on April 8, 1918, daughter of John and Philomena Kellar Ziemba, she was a lifelong resident of Pittsfield and a 1935 graduate of Pittsfield High School.

Mrs. Smith was employed at several secretarial positions for the former Berkshire Woolen Co., Union Federal Savings Bank, Stevens House of Carpets, and GE naval ordnance, where she retired in 1985 after 20 years of service.

She was a communicant of St. Charles' Church and a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee, where she officiated at the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, N.Y.

She was president, vice president and secretary-treasurer of the Northern N.Y. Speed Skating Association and was elected to and inducted into the Speed Skating Hall of Fame in Albany, N.Y.

She was also an avid bowler and a member of the Pittsfield Winter Sports Committee and the GE Pensioners' Club.

Her husband, Robert Howard Smith, whom she married in 1937 at Immaculate Conception Church in New Lebanon, N.Y., died Aug. 23, 1947.

She leaves a son, Robert P. Smith of Arlington, Va.; a daughter, Marilyn "Pat" Ryan of Pittsfield, and two sisters, Julia Retartyk and Eleanor L. Pannesco, both of Pittsfield.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Mrs. Mary T. Smith died in Pittsfield on Friday, Jan. 28, 2005. Beloved aunt to Colleen Donahue, Paul Ziemba, Peter Ziemba, Collin Garstang, James Garstang, Eileen Schmieder, Guy and Mark Pannesco, Robert Nesbit, Susan Moore and many great nieces and nephews.

She was a loving sister-in-law to Rita Nesbit and Jane Ziemba. She was predeceased by two sisters, Gertrude Garstang and Irene Ziemba, and a brother, Edward Ziemba. Funeral services will be Monday, Jan. 31, at 11 from the DWYER FUNERAL HOME with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at noon in St. Charles' Church celebrated by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be at the funeral home on Sunday, Jan. 30, from 2 to 5. If friends desire, donations in her memory may be made to the Pittsfield Winter Sports Committee in care of the funeral home.
