Iona Eugenia "Jene" Rudd

Iona Eugenia "Jene" Rudd, 85, of 175 Park Ave. died yesterday morning at home after a long illness.

Born in Schenectady, N.Y., on Sept. 3, 1919, daughter of James J. and Viola VanBuren Reardon, she grew up in Plattsburgh, N.Y., and graduated from St. John's Academy in 1938.

She moved to Pittsfield and attended the former Henry W. Bishop School of Nursing from 1938 to 1941.

Mrs. Rudd was employed during the 1960s as operating room technician at the former Pittsfield General Hospital.

She was a member of St. Helena's Chapel in Lenox and a former member of the women's auxiliaries at both St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Dalton and at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Pittsfield.

An advocate for children, she was a volunteer at Craneville School library, the Head Start program and Hancock Shaker Village.

She also had been active with the Girl and Boy Scouts and the Camp Fire Girls. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star.

She enjoyed reading, cooking, sewing, knitting and handiwork. She and her late husband, Gardner B. Rudd, were charter members of the Aurora Group.

Her husband, whom she married May 17, 1941, in St. Stephen's Church, died Sept. 23, 1997.

She leaves a son, Jeremy G. Rudd of Lenox; two daughters, Susan R. Sweatland of Pittsfield and Holly J. Rudd of Dalton, and five grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A service celebrating the life of Iona Rudd will be conducted Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at 2 at St. Helen's Chapel in Lenox by the Rev. Robert J. Bella and the Rev. Stanley M. Woolley.

Burial will follow in Main Street Cemetery in Dalton. The family will receive friends in the parish hall at the chapel from 1 to 2 before the service. She also is survived by her daughter-in-law, Susan W. Rudd of Lenox, and her son-in-law, Louis R. Sweatland Jr. of Pittsfield; and five grandchildren, Carrie Rudd Hornbeck, Sarah Rudd Ziemba, Amanda Sweatland Elliot, Ryan G. Rudd and Courtney J. Rudd. She was predeceased by her brother, Dr. James J. Reardon.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to either a memorial fund in her memory at St. Helena's Church, Elizabeth Freeman Center for Women or HospiceCare in the Berkshires, all in care of BARTLETT-WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 525 Main St., Dalton, MA 01226. Her commitment throughout her life was to her family and children.
