Bernard C. Robillard, 72, of Sampson Parkway died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Holyoke on July 25, 1932, son of Albert E. and Yvonne T. Robillard Robillard, he was a 1950 graduate of the former St. Jerome High School there. He earned an associate's degree in computer science from Berkshire Community College.
He moved to Pittsfield in 1958.
He enlisted in the Air Force in September 1952 and served as staff sergeant during the Korean War. He was discharged in September 1956.
Mr. Robillard was employed by GE for more than 30 years, first in Syracuse, N.Y., then in Pittsfield as an electrical technician in the ordnance department. He retired in 1989 from the computer programming department.
In the mid-1960s, he was elected president of the Berkshire County branch of the NAACP. He is believed to have been the first white to head the local branch, which was organized in 1918. He was also very active with MICA, now Habitat for Humanity, working to build homes for those in need for many years.
He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and a past member of its Holy Name Society.
He enjoyed reading, cooking and listening to WAMC Radio.
He and his wife, the former Margaret M. Bouyea, were married Jan. 28, 1956, in Our Lady of Hope Church in Springfield.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, David B. Robillard of Lanesboro; two daughters, Lisa Spangler and Susan Trudeau, both of Pittsfield; a brother, Jean Robillard of Apalachan, N.Y.; two sisters, Denise Sliwa of Chicopee and Evelyn Fournier of South Hadley, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandsons. Another daughter, Donna M. Robillard Perkins, died July 2, 1991.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Bernard C. Robillard, 72, was called safely home Jan. 22, 2005. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4 to 7 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. A funeral service will be held Thursday at 9 from the funeral home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at Sacred Heart Church, celebrated by the Rev. James K. Joyce, pastor.
Burial will take place at a later date in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to Gould Farm of Monterey or to WAMC Radio in care of the funeral home. Bernie will be remembered for his immeasurable generosity and kindness toward the less fortunate, but especially his love for his family and grandchildren: Julie, Sarah and Rebekah Perkins, Nathan and Jonathan Spangler, Christopher Robillard, Andrew and Jacob Trudeau, and his great-grandsons, Noah and Josiah Perkins.
His humor, compassion, and curiosity for both the mundane and extraordinary moments of life are the legacy he leaves with his family and friends. He and his wife would have celebrated 49 years of love and commitment this Friday. He was predeceased by a brother, Marcelle.
