Benedict George Sohm

Benedict George Sohm, 91, of Thunderhill Farm died yesterday morning at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.
He had been a resident of Seaford, Long Island, N.Y., for many years.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on March 17, 1913, son of Louis and Mary Herrlitz Sohm, he was a 1930 graduate of Holy Trinity High School there. He also graduated from St. John's University in New York in 1935. In 1968, he received a degree from Rutgers University Graduate School of Banking.
An Army veteran of World War II, he was stationed in Europe for most of the war and was discharged as a staff sergeant in the 849th signal intelligence corps.
A career banker, Mr. Sohm had been employed by the former Security National Bank of Seaford and Babylon, now J.P. Morgan-Chase Banks, in Seaford for many years. He also taught at the Nassau County Chapter of the American Institute of Banking.
While in Lenox, he was a communicant of St. Vincent de Paul Church for the past five years. In Seaford, he was a 50-year communicant of St. William the Abbott Church, where he served for many years as an usher.
He was a Little League umpire for more than 25 years. He was a past president and Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Club in Babylon, N.Y., and was also a member of the Lions Club in Seaford. An avid skier, he also enjoyed traveling, reading and gardening.
His wife, the former Isabel Roach, whom he married Oct. 12, 1940, in St. William the Abbott Church, died Feb. 8, 1998.
He leaves a daughter, Ellen I. Roche of Lenox, with whom he made his home; two sons, Benedict Sohm Jr. of Amityville, N.Y., and Robert L. Sohm of West Moreland, N.H.; a sister, Margaret Otterbeck of Sayville, N.Y., seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Benedict George Sohm of the West Wing, Thunderhill Farm, died Saturday morning surrounded by his family. His funeral will be Tuesday at 9 from the ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Lenox Dale.
Burial with full military honors will be Wednesday at 1 in Calverton National Cemetery, 210 Princeton Blvd., Calverton, Long Island, N.Y. Calling hours will be Monday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home.
He is survived by his loving grandchildren, Matthew Sohm, Sarahanne Sohm and Katherine Sohm, Joanna E. Roche, Isabel Roche O'Brien, Emily C. Cotter, Caroline Roche Pratt; his beloved great-grandchildren, Dylan and Emily Sohm, Benedict Cotter, Jack O'Brien and Luke Stringer, and his son-in-law, W. David Roche.
