Howard William Evans

Howard William Evans, 96, of 58 Emerson Ave. died yesterday at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center in Lenox.

Born in Pittsfield on Nov. 26, 1908, son of William E. and Nellie Jane Booth Evans, he was a graduate of Pittsfield High School and the former Berkshire Business College.

Mr. Evans was employed by GE in the plant protection department of ordnance systems for 31 years, retiring in 1973 as a lieutenant. During high school and college, he worked as a desk clerk at the YMCA, then in the accounting department of GE for two years and, for 10 years at the former Federal Loan Co.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church.

He also was a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' clubs and the Golden Seniors Club. He was a member and past master, from 1975 to 1976, of the Crescent Pittsfield AF&AM Lodge of Masons.

He enjoyed reading and travel.

He and his wife, the former Esther B. Saur, were married Sept. 12, 1932.

Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Beatrice M. DaSilva of Lanesboro, two grandsons and two great-grandsons.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Howard W. Evans, who died Jan. 22, 2005, will be conducted Wednesday at 2 at WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Dr. Roger Davis, pastor of First United Methodist Church of Pittsfield.

Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Housatonic. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 5 to 7 at the funeral home. At 7, the Crescent Pittsfield AF&AM Lodge of Masons will hold a Masonic memorial service. Among survivors are his grandsons, Derek Evans of Braintree and Aaron Evans of Hanover; his granddaughter-in-law, Alison Evans of Hanover; his great-grandsons, Ethan and Maxwell Evens, both of Hanover; great-nieces, Mikki Hargrave and Marjorie Olsen, and great-nephew, Diehl Ott.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to Shriners Hospital in care of the funeral home, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
