Margaret J. Sweeney

Margaret J. Sweeney, 89, of 40 Old Stockbridge Road died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center.
She was a former member of the Great Barrington Finance Committee and the only woman to serve as its chairman, and past secretary of the Great Barrington Democratic Town Committee.
Miss Sweeney was also past president of the American Cancer Society, where she was a coordinator for 33 years, and a past member of the Board of Registrars of Great Barrington.
Born in Great Barrington on Jan. 23, 1915, daughter of John and Margaret Fitzpatrick Sweeney, she was a 1932 graduate of the former Searles High School, where she played tennis, field hockey and basketball. She also attended the former Berkshire Business College in Pittsfield.
During World War II, she was a member of the Red Cross Motor Corps.
Miss Sweeney was employed as an office manager at Butternut Basin until retiring in 1980.
She was a communicant of St. Peter's Church, where she was past president of the Rosary Society. She bowled at one time on a five-member team that toured North and South Berkshire.
In 1946, she joined Wyantenuck Country Club, where she served as treasurer of the Ladies' Golf Committee, as Ladies' Allied representative and as chairman of the Ladies' Night League.
She was a member of the Thursday Morning Club, the Lloyd Lambert 70plus Ski Club and Wyantenuck Country Club, and treasurer emeritus of the Searles Alumni Association.
She leaves a brother, John Sweeney of Boca Raton, Fla.; and a niece, Virginia Sweeney Humphrey of Bloomfield, Conn., and a nephew, John "Jack" Sweeney of Stockbridge, both of whom she raised from childhood.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Margaret J. Sweeney, who died Jan. 16, 2005, will be Wednesday, Jan. 19 at 9 at BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Peter's Church celebrated by the Rev. Christopher J. Waitekus, pastor.
Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. The family will receive friends tomorrow, Jan. 18, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy in Margaret's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the St. Peter's Ramp Fund, both in care of the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
She also leaves two great-nieces, Erin Sweeney and Karen Fischer, and two great-nephews, Nicholas Sweeney and Kevin Humphrey, as well as two great-great-nieces and two great-great-nephews.
