Chester Louis Gabriel

Chester Louis Gabriel, 65, of 52 Brunswick St. died Wednesday at home.
Born in New York City on Nov. 10, 1939, son of James and Virginia Lapinskas Gabriel, he attended schools in Pittsfield and was a 1957 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
He also graduated from St. Luke's Radiology School at the former St. Luke's Hospital in 1963. He was the first male to graduate from the program.
He served with the Coast Guard Reserves as yeoman first class for 41 years.
Mr. Gabriel had been manager of the former Hillcrest Hospital Radiology Department for 35 years, retiring in 2001. After his retirement, he was a volunteer at the Hillcrest Campus and was a buyer for the gift shop.
He was a communicant of St. Teresa's Church, where he was an active traveler with the church group, visiting many countries abroad. He had been involved with Springside Greenhouse for the past 15 years and the Pittsfield Garden Tours for the past six years.
He also helped with holiday decorating at St. Mark's Church. He enjoyed flower gardening and collectibles.
He leaves his companion of 40 years, Donald D. Betit, with whom he resided.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Chester L. Gabriel, who died Jan. 12, 2005, will be Saturday at 8:45 from the DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9:30 at St. Teresa's Church, celebrated by the Rev. John J. Varley, pastor. Entombment will follow at St. Michael the Archangel Mausoleum at St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Calling hours will be today, Friday, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Pittsfield Garden Tours or to the Berkshire Humane Society, both in care of the funeral home.
He is survived by many loving cousins, including Noreen C. Whitcomb of Springfield, Francis Gasson of Jacksonville, Fla., Pamela W. Nichols of Pittsfield, Patricia W. Curley of East Longmeadow, John M. Whitcomb of Powhaton, Va., Daniel J. Whitcomb of Boston, Frank Sylvanovich of Detroit, Francis Gasson Jr., Robert Gasson, Timothy Gasson and Charles Gasson, all of Jacksonville; his special cousin, Katherine Nichols of Pittsfield, and his special close friends, Catherine Smith of Blandford, Ann and Steve Yarmey of Newcastle, Maine, and Sandra Lorsher of Blandford.
