James S. Bownes

James S. Bownes, 97, of 106 Third St. died Sunday at home.
Born in Camden, S.C., on Oct. 29, 1907, son of Sam and Mary Carlina Bowens, he graduated from high school there.
He came to Pittsfield in 1942.
Mr. Bownes had been employed as a stock chaser at GE for 25 years, retiring in 1968. Prior to GE, he had worked in area hotels in maintenance.
He was a member of Second Congregational Church. An avid reader and sports fan, he also enjoyed carpentry, plumbing and electrical work, walking, traveling and golfing.
He and his wife, the former Rachel L. Ephraim, were married Dec. 27, 1944.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, James D. Bownes of Wilton Manor, Fla.; two daughters, Evelyn Clark of Patterson, N.J., and Lorraine Vasser of Milwaukee; a brother, Willie Bowens of Great Barrington, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for James S. Bownes, 97, of Pittsfield, who died Jan. 9, 2005, will be co-conducted Saturday, Jan. 15, at 10 at Second Congregational Church by the Revs. Carol Towley, Charles Young and Russell Moody.
Burial will take place at a later date in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be Saturday from 9 to 10 at Second Congregational Church, prior to the service. He was predeceased by two sisters.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or to the charity of one's choice in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201, which is in charge of arrangements.
