Sophie Katz, 87, of 176 Columbus Ave., Berkshiretown Apartments, died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center after a long illness.
Born in North Adams on July 16, 1917, daughter of Max and Sarah Apkin, she attended schools there, including Drury High School.
She and her husband, Henry "Harry" Katz, owned and operated the former Katz's Korner store and lunch counter from 1959 until selling it in 1977. Before that, she was employed in the women's coat departments of the former England Brothers and the former Robinson's stores and, as a young woman, by the former Kaplan Bakery in North Adams.
She was a member of Knesset Israel Synagogue and Hadassah of Pittsfield, and active in cooking and baking for many of the events and gatherings at the synagogue.
She and her husband were married Sept. 29, 1940, in the former United House of Israel Synagogue in North Adams.
Besides her husband, she leaves a sister, Bessie Melcer of Coral Gables, Fla.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Sophie Katz, 87, died Jan. 8, 2005. The funeral will be today at 1 at Knesset Israel Synagogue, with Rabbi Jeffrey W. Goldwasser officiating, followed by burial in Knesset Israel Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Knesset Israel Building Fund in care of DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. She will always be remembered by her loving niece and nephew, Marsha Davis and Eugene Tarsky, both of Boston.
The family will be sitting shiva at 605 Elm St. until Wednesday evening, with services tonight from 6 to 8, and Tuesday and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8.
