Walter F. "Two Quarters" Messer, 81, of 18 Glenwood Ave. died Tuesday at Berkshire Medical Center following a long illness.
Born in Pittsfield on March 28, 1923, son of Walter V. and Albena Merriam Messer, he attended local schools.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II and an Army veteran of the Korean War. He also served with the Navy Reserves in Thompsonville, Conn., for two years. He served a total of 11 years and did nine tours and received citations and decorations from both the Navy and the Army.
Mr. Messer had been employed as a roofing supervisor for many years in Sacramento, Calif., and was also a self-employed master cabinetmaker and carpenter, retiring in 1984. He continued to do carpentry work until 2000.
He was a former member of the United Union of Roofers, Water-proofers and Allied Workers and the A.F.L.-CIO in Sacramento. He enjoyed cabinetmaking, building furniture, fishing, hunting, photography, gourmet cooking and gardening and was an avid coin collector. A Citizen Band Radio and ham radio operator, he was known as "Two Quarters."
He and his wife, the former Donna M. Cole McMahon, were married Aug. 19, 1989.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Walter V. Messer II of Hubbard-ston; two stepsons, Jonathan Winslow of Hopkinton and Timothy Drabick of Hopewell Junction, N.Y.; four daughters, Maryanne Morgan and Dawn Marie Potter, both of Long Island, N.Y., Suzanne J. Stocks of Schenectady, N.Y., and Michelle D. Feeley of Pittsfield; two stepdaughters, LaDonna M. Johnson of Pittsfield and Vernetta Marra of Lanesboro; two sisters, Elizabeth Lyon and Albena Messer, both of Pittsfield, 16 grandchildren, 22 step-grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Memorial Service for Walter F. "Two Quarters" Messer, who died Jan. 4, 2005, will be held Saturday, Jan. 8, at 1 at the FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St., with the Rev. Michael Shershanovich, pastor of St. Joseph's Church, officiating.
At Mr. Messer's request, cremation took place. He was survived by 41 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by six brothers and a sister. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, donations may be made to Donna McMahon Messer to defray expenses.
There will be no calling hours.
