Salvatore P. Chitarra, 90, of 924 Barker Road died Saturday at home.
Born in Pittsfield on June 5, 1914, son of Vincent and Josephine Bologna Chitarra, he attended local schools.
Mr. Chitarra was employed by GE in the plastics division for 47 years, retiring in 1974 as a senior lab technician.
He also was a member of GE's fire safety unit. Earlier, he worked as a steamfitter.
He was a lifelong communicant of Mount Carmel Church and a member of the Italian-American Club, and the GE Pensioners' and Quarter Century clubs.
He enjoyed fishing and gardening, and was a New York Yankees fan.
He and his wife, the former Doris Gilbert, were married June 5, 1937.
Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Eleanor DeSanctis and Barbara Londergan, both of Pittsfield, and Josephine Woitkowski of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a son, Philip V. Chitarra of Orlando, Fla.; eight grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Salvatore P. Chitarra, 90, who died Jan. 1, 2005, will be conducted Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 1:30 at DERY FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor of St. Charles' Church.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 6 to 8 at the funeral home. The omission of flowers is requested. Memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, 01201.
Mr. Chitarra was predeceased by his sister, Mary Pinto, his brother, Benjamin J. Chitarra, and his grandson, Martin VanBramer.
