Henry Stentiford Jr., 83, of 17 Flower Ave., Madison, Conn., died Friday at Connecticut Hospice in Branford.
He was a former owner and operator of Follwell Greenhouses and Gifts at 805 North St.
Born in Pittsfield on Sept. 30, 1921, son of Henry Stentiford Sr. and Violet Follwell Stentiford, he was a 1939 graduate of Pittsfield High School and received his degree from Stockbridge School of Agriculture at Massachusetts State College in Amherst, now the University of Massachusetts.
He also received an Army scholarship to the University of Geneva in Switzerland, where he did graduate work in horticulture and studied French and Spanish.
A decorated Army veteran of World War II, he enlisted in 1942 and served in the European theater.
Mr. Stentiford was the third generation of his family to run Follwell's, which has been in operation for five generations. After retiring in 1989, his son, Henry Stentiford III, took over the business, followed by his grandson Brian Stentiford.
The gift store was housed in a glass conservatory that was purchased and moved by the Stentifords from its original location on the grounds of the estate that is now the Hillcrest campus of Berkshire Health Systems.
A member of the Tri-Town Rotary Club since 1948, he received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award in 1987. The award is based on financial achievement, personal accomplishment and character, and a commitment to community and peace. He also was a member of the Pittsfield Lodge of Masons.
He and his wife, the former Margaret E. Lavigne, were married Sept. 16, 1946, in St. Charles' Church.
Besides his wife and son, of East Haddam, Conn., he leaves three daughters, Carol A. Schauer of Treasure Island, Fla., Holly Gifford of Niskayuna, N.Y., and Linda Reyka of Madison, Conn.; 12 grandchildren, and a great-grandson.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Henry Stentiford Jr., 83, formerly of Pittsfield, who died Dec. 24, 2004, will be Wednesday at 10 at DERY FUNERAL HOME. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be tomorrow, Dec. 28, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home.
Memorial donations may be made to Connecticut Hospice in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St. A scholarship in his name is also being established at the Stockbridge School of Agriculture in Amherst.
