Retired Army Col. Richard E. Maloy

Retired Army Col. Richard E. Maloy, 83, of 308 Orrs Bridge Road, Camp Hill, Pa., formerly of Pittsfield, died Saturday at Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill.

Born in Pittsfield on March 30, 1921, son of Richard J. and Julia E. TierneyMaloy, he graduated in 1938 from Pittsfield High School, then attended St. John's Preparatory School for a year. He graduated in 1943 from the University of Massachusetts, where he played varsity basketball and baseball.

An Army career officer, Col. Maloy received his commission in November 1943. He completed an Army communications program and a course at its Quartermaster School in Fort Lee, Va., and, in 1959, graduated from the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

A World War II veteran, he served with the 17th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, 9th Army, in campaigns in northern France, central Germany and the Rhineland.

He was later attached to the 15th Constabulary Squadron in Germany, and served in the Korean War as assistant division quartermaster for the 25th Infantry Division. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star.

Col. Maloy's career in the quartermaster division included posts in New York, Natick, France, San Francisco and Fort Lee, where he was a regular instructor at the Quartermaster School. He retired in 1971.

Following the service, he worked in the Pennsylvania attorney general's office and the Pennsylvania Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, retiring in 1980.

He was a member of the Military Officers Association of America, the West Shore Elks Lodge and the Navy Commissioned Officers Mess, and was a Tennessee Squire.

He was a life member of VFW Memorial Post 6704 and Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 50, all in Virginia. A lifelong Red Sox fan, he watched them win the World Series.

He leaves his wife, the former Marjorie Klime; two sons, Richard E. Maloy Jr. of Northampton and James Maloy of Charlottesville, Va.; three daughters, Nancy Bozenhard of Limington, Maine, Barbara Heflin of Norfolk, Va., and Maria Maloy of Camp Hill; a stepson, Kurt Laessig of Camp Hill; a foster son, Timothy Schell of Camp Hill; a sister, Mary Ferris of Pittsfield, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for retired Army Col. Richard E. Maloy, who died Dec. 18, 2004, will be held Monday, Dec. 27, at 7 p.m. at MYERS-HARNER FUNERAL HOME, Camp Hill. Interment with full military honors will be Tuesday at 2 in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, Pa. Viewing will be Monday from 6 to 7 at the funeral home.
