Richard E. Wheeler, 73, of Parkside Avenue died yesterday morning at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Pittsfield on March 26, 1931, son of Russell G. and Madeline L. Farnum Wheeler, he attended Lenox schools and was a graduate of Lenox High School.
An Army veteran of the Korean War, he served in Germany and in Korea as a tank driver.
Mr. Wheeler was a Pittsfield firefighter from Nov. 18, 1962, until his retirement Sept. 22, 1984, from Engine 6 on Holmes Road. Earlier, he worked for the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority in the maintenance department for several years.
He was a communicant of All Souls' Church and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
He enjoyed gardening and hunting.
He and his wife, the former Lillian M. Torrero, were married Oct. 5, 1957, at Mount Carmel Church.
Besides his wife, he leaves a brother, Robert Wheeler of Lenox, and four sisters, Claire Armstrong, M. Ann Ward and Barbara Sibley, all of Lenox, and Elizabeth Harrison of Pittsfield.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Richard E. "Dick" Wheeler, who died Dec. 17, 2004, will be Monday at 10:15 from DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at All Souls' Church celebrated by the Rev. Christopher J. Waitekus, pastor of St. Ann's Church in Lenox.
Burial will follow in St. Ann's Cemetery in Lenox. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Make-a-Wish in care of UNICO or to All Souls' Church, both in care of the funeral home. Mr. Wheeler also is survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Russ Wheeler, and by a sister, Mary Aspromonti.
