Rita Mary Vella

Rita Mary Vella, 86, formerly of 283 Cheshire Road, died yesterday morning at Berkshire Medical Center.

She had been a resident of Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility for three years.

Born in East Brookfield on June 28, 1918, daughter of Adolph and Sophie Richard, she was raised in Dalton and attended schools there.

She had resided in Pittsfield for many years.

During World War II, Mrs. Vella was employed by GE. Later, she worked for the former Dale Brothers Cleaners and the former Fenway Cleaners.

She was a communicant of Mount Carmel Church and a member of the Italian-American Club, where she bowled in the women's league.

Her husband, Reno Louis Vella, whom she married Sept. 2, 1935, died Nov. 10, 1993.

She leaves a son, Edward L. Vella Sr. of Pittsfield; a sister, Lillian Haddad of Bennington, Vt.; three grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Rita M. Vella, who died Dec. 17, 2004, will be Monday at 9 at DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church by the Rev. Geoffrey Deeker, CSS, pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Elder Services in care of the funeral home.

Mrs. Vella is lovingly survived by her daughter-in-law, Ann Vella, and by her three cherished grandchildren, Susan Vella Gage, Lee Failla and Edward Vella Jr., and by her adored great-grandchildren, Matthew and Michelle Gage, Courtney Failla, Jared Vella, Jonathan Vella and Jessie Rufo.
