Arthur R. "Smokey" Dietlin Jr.

Arthur R. "Smokey" Dietlin Jr., 48, of 218 Orchard Road died Thursday evening at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Pittsfield on March 24, 1956, son of Caroline Martin Dietlin and the late Arthur R. Dietlin Sr., he attended local schools and was a 1974 graduate of Wahconah Regional High School.

He also attended Berkshire Community College.

At the time of his death, Mr. Dietlin had been employed by Boyd Converting in Lee in the quality control department for two years. He previously worked in the engineering department at Mead Paper Corp., now MeadWestvaco, for 14 years.

He was a member of the Lenox Sportsmen's Club, the Lee Sportsmen's Club and the Dalton Rod and Gun Club. He enjoyed competition handgun shooting and archery, and was a Harry Potter fan.

He also enjoyed making fireworks, which were used in the Pittsfield Fourth of July celebrations at Wahconah Park for a number of years.

Besides his mother, of Dalton, he leaves two brothers, Richard Dietlin of Great Barrington and Scott Dietlin Sr. of Pittsfield; two sisters, Lori Herrick of Pittsfield and Jeanne Beutien of Kankakee, Ill., and his paternal grandmother, Cordelia Dietlin of Pittsfield.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Arthur R. "Smokey" Dietlin Jr., 48, was called safely home on Dec. 16, 2004. The funeral will be Monday at 9 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 at St. Agnes' Church by the Rev. Christopher Malatesta, pastor.

Burial will follow in Ashuelot Street Cemetery. Calling hours will be tomorrow from 1 to 4 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Association in care of the funeral home.

He also is survived by his brothers-in-law, Robert Herrick and Brian Beutien, his sister-in-law, Karen Dietlin, and several nieces and nephews.
