Robert F. Steele Sr

Robert F. Steele Sr., 64, of 45 Beverly St. died Saturday at home.

Born in Hartford, Conn., on Nov. 6, 1940, son of Elliot B. and Evelyn Lihue Steele, he was educated in Manchester, Conn., schools and was a 1959 graduate of Manchester High School.

He moved to Dalton 36 years ago.

He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Growler and USS Holland.

At the time of his death, Mr. Steele was employed by General Dynamics as principal engineer. He worked for that company and for its predecessor, GE, for a total of 38 years.

He was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Pittsfield and the Anthony J. DeAngelus VFW post.

He loved fixing anything and was known as "Mr. Fix It." He also enjoyed gardening and staying at his cottage in Niantic, Conn.

He and his wife, the former Barbara Sayre, were married June 8, 1963, in Old Lyme, Conn.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Robert F. Steele of Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, Susan E. Beaudoin of Dalton and Amy E. Dunbar of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and two grandchildren. Another son, William C. Steele, died March 13, 1974.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Requiem Mass for Robert F. Steele Sr., 64, of 45 Beverly St., Dalton, who died Dec. 11, 2004, will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Pittsfield by the Rev. Gay M. Rahn.

Burial will follow in Ashuelot Cemetery in Dalton. There will be no calling hours. Donations in memory of Bob may be made to Shannon's House, a home away for adult cancer patients in Brookline, in care of DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, 890 Main St., Dalton, MA 01226.

Bob will be lovingly missed by his grandchildren, Andrew Beaudoin and Kathryn Beaudoin, with whom he loved spending time, and by his sons-in-law, David S. Beaudoin and Kenneth C. Dunbar.
