Bernice M. Carpenter, 81, formerly of 44 Michael Drive, died Tuesday at Providence Care Center in Lenox, where she had resided since 2000.
Born in North Adams on Jan. 17, 1923, daughter of William R. and Mary L. Rougier Mason, she attended schools there.
Mrs. Carpenter was employed for 15 years by the Pittsfield Public Schools in the cafeteria department at Herberg Middle School, retiring in 1995.
She worked for GE for 10 years, including during World War II.
She was a former communicant of St. Francis' Church and enjoyed cooking, reading and doing puzzles.
Her former husband, Ernest Gordon Carpenter, whom she married June 29, 1940, died Sept. 9, 1982.
She leaves two sons, Richard E. Carpenter and Michael G. Carpenter, both of Pittsfield, and two grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Bernice M. Mason Carpenter, who died Dec. 7, 2004, will be celebrated Friday, Dec. 10, at 10 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church by the Rev. Geoffrey J. Deeker, CSS, pastor.
Burial will follow in the family plot at Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 8:30 to 9:30 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St. Survivors include two grandchildren, Marc A. Carpenter and Sienna M. Carpenter; a daughter-in-law, Ann Marie Carpenter, and Richard E. Carpenter's fiancée, Janine Wells.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mount Carmel Church in care of the funeral home.
