Frank J. Maffuccio

Frank J. Maffuccio, 87, of 57 Ontario St. died yesterday at home.

Born in Monteforte Cilento, province of Salerno, Italy, on Dec. 10, 1916, son of Giuseppe and Carmella Mondeli Maffuccio, he emigrated to the United States with his family in 1922 and attended Pittsfield schools.

A World War II veteran, he served in the Army in the Pacific theater and received several campaign ribbons and medals.

Following the war, Mr. Maffuccio owned and operated the former P-38 restaurant on East Street. He later was employed by the Pittsfield School Department, retiring in 1978.

He was a communicant of Mount Carmel Church and a member of its Holy Name Society. He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 448 and Charles Persip American Legion Post 68, and a member of Father William Contino Italian-American War Veterans Post 75.

He was also a member of the Ralph J. Froio Senior Center, the Golden Seniors, AARP, the Italian-American and Quality Time clubs, and Green Thumb.

He was an accomplished gardener.

His wife, the former Aida Imarisio, whom he married Nov. 25, 1944, at Mount Carmel Church, died April 19, 1998.

He leaves, a son, Edward A. Maffuccio of Dalton; a sister, Mary C. Butterworth of Pittsfield; a brother, Daniel J. Maffuccio of Anacortes, Wash., and two grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Mr. Frank J. Maffuccio will be Saturday, Dec. 4, at 8 a.m. from FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church by the Rev. Geoffrey J. Deeker, CSS, pastor.

Burial will take place in the family plot at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Pittsfield. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, from 4 to 7. Italian-American War veterans will meet at 4:30 for the Veterans' Ritual Service, and the Mount Carmel Church Holy Name Society will meet at 5:30 for a prayer service.

Mr. Maffuccio is survived by two grandsons, Anthony E. Maffuccio of Miami and Joseph J. Maffuccio of Boston; a daughter-in-law, Colleen B. Maffuccio, and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Ralph Maffuccio and Dominic Maffuccio, and by three sisters, Irene Kimber, America Reynolds and Lucy C. Mazzeo. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mount Carmel Church in care of the funeral home.
