James Joseph Cullen

James Joseph Cullen, 90, formerly of 16 Gordon St., died Friday at Port St. Lucie (Fla.) Nursing Home.

Born in Pittsfield on Aug. 12, 1914, son of James F. and Kathryn C. Donovan Cullen, he was a graduate of St. Joseph's High School. He had spent winters in Port St. Lucie after retiring.

He moved back to Pittsfield full time from 1992 until returning to Florida last year.

Mr. Cullen had been employed by GE for 31 years as a millwright maintenance welder, retiring in 1976.

He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church.

He was a member of the GE Quarter Century Club and a former member of Elks Lodge 272. He enjoyed baseball, woodworking, working with stained glass and painting.

His wife, the former Gladys C. Lewis, whom he married in February 1939 in St. Agnes' Church, died June 9, 1997.

He leaves a son, Peter J. Cullen of Port St. Lucie; five sisters, Katherine Meade, Helen Decelles, Bernice Kunce and Bertha Barry, all of Pittsfield, and Margaret Rule of Port Charlotte, Fla.; two grandchildren, and two great-granddaughters.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- James J. Cullen, 90, was called safely home Nov. 26, 2004. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. The funeral will be Wednesday at 8:15 from the funeral home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 9 at St. Joseph's Church by the Rev. Michael Shershanovich, pastor.

Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph's Church in care of the funeral home. James will be forever remembered by his daughter-in-law, Becky Cullen; grandchildren Curtis Cullen and Carrie Hitt, and great-granddaughters Sophia Hitt and Jeanette Hitt.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Elizabeth "Betty" Snyder and Mildred Snyder.
