Dorothy A. Ward

Dorothy A. Ward, 85, of 64 Cleveland St. died Saturday afternoon at home.

Born in Pittsfield on Aug. 6, 1919, daughter of Frederick J. and Anna Hopper Carpenter, she was a 1937 graduate of Pittsfield High School. She also graduated from the former Berkshire Business College.

She lived in Patterson, N.J., and in Philadelphia before returning to Pittsfield 21 years ago.

A Navy veteran of World War II, she served from 1943 to 1945.

A homemaker, Mrs. Ward was employed by GE in the power transformer department at one time.

She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church.

She and her husband, William J. Ward Jr., celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary on Nov. 3. They were married in St. Mary's Church.

Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, William J. Ward III of Pittsfield and John M. Ward of Fairlawn, N.J.; a daughter, Maryanne Thomas of Boynton Beach, Fla.; a sister, Grace Suman of Wilmington, N.C., and seven grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Dorothy A. Ward died in Pittsfield on Saturday, Nov. 27. The funeral will be Wednesday, Dec. 1, at 10 from DWYER FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at Sacred Heart Church celebrated by the Rev. James K. Joyce, pastor.

Burial will follow in Stockbridge Cemetery. Calling hours will be tomorrow, Tuesday, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Mrs. Ward also leaves a sister-in-law, Peg Carpenter of Southbury, Conn.; daughters-in-law, Meg Ward of Pittsfield and Patricia Ward of Fairlawn, and her son-in-law, John Thomas of Boynton Beach.

She was the beloved grandmother to Maggie Ward Schack, Elizabeth Ward, Michael Ward, Sarah Thomas, John Thomas, Jessica Ward and Erica Ward. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home.
