William P. Quinn

William P. Quinn, 79, of 327 High St., a longtime Dalton educator, died Saturday at home after a long illness.

Mr. Quinn was a former chairman of the Dalton Housing Authority.

Born on March 17, 1925, in Pittsfield, son of Michael J. and Anna Poopor Quinn, he was a 1942 graduate of St. Joseph's High School and a 1946 graduate of St. Michael's College in Colchester, Vt., where he earned a bachelor of science degree.

A Navy veteran of World War II, he participated in the Battle of Normandy.

Mr. Quinn taught at both Wahconah Regional High and at Nessacus Middle schools, retiring in 1988.

He was a communicant of St. Agnes' Church and a former president of the Dalton Rotary Club.

He was a member of Wahconah Country Club and enjoyed playing tennis and golf, skiing, gardening and carpentry.

His wife, the former Constance Whited, whom he married Nov. 26, 1955, in Houlton, Maine, died Sept. 7, 1991.

He leaves three daughters, Karen M. Quinn, Patricia A. Rudd and Bridget N. DiCarlo, all of Dalton; four sons, Timothy Quinn of Hinsdale, Michael N. Quinn of Boston, Joseph P. Quinn of Milton and Steven W. Quinn of Taunton; two brothers, the Rev. Joseph M. Quinn, CSC, of North Dartmouth and Thomas P. Quinn of Lanesboro, and 13 grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for William P. "Bill" Quinn, 79, of Dalton, who died Nov. 27, 2004, will be Thursday at 9:15 from DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME in Dalton, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Agnes' Church concelebrated by the Rev. Christopher Malatesta, pastor, and Bill's brother, the Rev. Joseph M. Quinn, CSC.

Burial will follow in Ashuelot Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 5 to 7 at the funeral home, 890 Main St., Dalton. Bill will be greatly missed by his 13 grandchildren, Matt, Kelsey, Courtney, Brittany, Amelia, Joey, James, Brian and Michael Quinn, Nick, Brianna and Mitch DiCarlo, and Keanna Rudd. He also leaves two sons-in-law, Frank Rudd and Don DiCarlo, as well as three daughters-in-law, Lynn, Heidi and Terri Quinn.

He was predeceased by another granddaughter, Sara Rudd, and by two sisters, Mary Gaffney and Elaine Tagliente. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Bill may be made to the Make-a-Wish Foundation or to the Jimmy Fund, both in care of the funeral home.
