Ilario L. "Lolly" Menin

Ilario L. "Lolly" Menin, 93, formerly of 12 Melrose Ave., died Friday at Laurel Lake Center for Health and Rehabilitation in Lee, where he had resided since July.
Born in Pittsfield on Sept. 18, 1911, son of Ilario Menin and Teresa Tezza Menin Irali, he was a 1930 graduate of Pittsfield High School, where he played third base on the team that won the county championship from 1928 to 1930. He also graduated from Bay Path Institute in Springfield in 1932.
A Navy veteran of World War II, he served as a yeoman third class with the Amphibious Corps in the Pacific theater aboard a landing craft infantry.
Mr. Menin was employed by the Berkshire Athenaeum as building superintendent, retiring in 1970 after 35 years of service.
He was a communicant of All Souls' Church and a member of its Holy Name Society, and a member of United Commercial Travelers, Father William Contino Post 75 Italian-American War Veterans, the Italian-American Club, Ralph J. Froio Senior Center, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Wine Athletic Club Bowling League and the American Association of Retired Persons. He was also an honorary member of Musicians Local 109 and a volunteer member of the Red Cross.
Mr. Menin was the first accordion instructor in the city of Pittsfield, teaching from his home. He also had his own musical band.
He was a founder and original member of the Wine Athletic Club baseball team, which competed throughout the county andthe Pittsfield City League during the Depression.
He enjoyed music, sports, reading and traveling.
His wife, the former Olga M. "Ukie" Carpinello, whom he married July 13, 1936, died Feb. 6, 1999.
He leaves a son, Lawrence I. Menin of Pittsfield; two daughters, Patricia A. Tretowicz of Liverpool, N.Y., and Livia M. Lawlor of Surprise, Ariz.; a sister, Mary M. Daly of Pittsfield; six grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Ilario L. "Lolly" Menin will be Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, at 9 from FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 at All Souls' Church, 51 Pembroke Ave., by the Rev. Geoffrey J. Deeker, CSS, pastor.
Burial with military honors will take place in the family plot at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be tomorrow, Nov. 30, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Survivors include six grandchildren, Kevin and Mark Lawlor, Lisa Raby, Lawrence R. Menin, Mark and David Tretowicz, and 10 great-grandchildren, Jacob and Abigail Lawlor, Alyssa and Adam Tretowicz, Hannah, Samantha and Michael Raby Jr., Luke and Keith Menin, Lindsey Ann Tretowicz; a daughter-in-law, Connie Menin; and several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and nephews, and cousins.
Italian-American War Veterans Post 75 of Pittsfield will meet at the funeral home tomorrow at 4:30 for a veterans' ritual service, and All Souls' Holy Name Society will meet at 5:30 for a prayer service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to All Souls' Church or the American Heart Association, both in care of the funeral home. He was predeceased by a brother, Frank Menin.
