Betty Ann Tetlow

Betty Ann Tetlow, 80, of Tolland, Conn., formerly of Pittsfield, died Saturday morning at Connecticut Hospice in Branford.

Born in Kansas City, Mo., on Dec. 6, 1923, daughter of Richard T. and Hazel Griffith McGinnis, she moved to Philadelphia and was educated in schools there.

She received a degree in journalism from Pennsylvania State University.

Mrs. Tetlow was employed in the newspaper advertising business in New Jersey and worked for several years for the Air Force in Anchorage, Alaska. She later became a caseworker for children in foster care in Utica, N.Y.

She researched the life and writings of feminist Olive Schreiner, studying primary sources in Austin, Texas, and traveled several times to Africa for her writings.

She had four articles published in academic and literary journals.

She was drawn to the area in the 1970s by her interest in joining the Sufi community in nearby New York, though she eventually settled in Pittsfield. Active in the anti-nuclear movement, she participated in a protest in 1979 at the Yankee Rowe Nuclear Power Plant.

She and her husband, Frank C. Tetlow, were married 25 years. He died in April 2002.

She leaves a stepdaughter, Margaret Moore of Tolland; a son, Christopher Fradkin of Sherman Oaks, Calif., and three grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Betty McGinnis Tetlow, 80, died peacefully Nov. 20, 2004. The funeral will be tomorrow, Nov. 23, at 1 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. Following cremation, interment will be at a later date. There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Huntington's Disease Foundation or Connecticut Hospice, both in care of the funeral home. She also is survived by her son-in-law, Robert E. Moore Sr. of Tolland, and three beautiful grandchildren whom she cherished with all her heart, Robert E. Moore Jr. and Rachel Moore, both of Tolland, and Ruby Fradkin of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; her long-beloved friends, Mr. Al Radlo of California and Ms. Helen Coleman of Florida. A special thank-you to Ms. Candi Michaud, who took such loving care of Betty in her final years.

Mrs. Tetlow took care of her husband for many years while he was suffering from Huntington's disease. The love they shared was a bond so strong. Betty was one of strength and courage and overall love for her family. Betty and her husband traveled the world early in their marriage and enjoyed every minute that they shared.
