Dr. Stephen L. St. Palley Sr.

Dr. Stephen L. St. Palley Sr., 80, of 60 North St. and Dunedin, Fla., died Wednesday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.

Born in Pittsfield on Sept. 3, 1924, son of Zoltan and Isabel M. Janoski St. Palley, he was a 1942 graduate of Pittsfield High School.

He was also a graduate of the Chicago School of Optometry.

He served in the Army during World War II.

An optometrist for 30 years, Dr. St. Palley owned and operated his own practice on Maplewood Avenue in Pittsfield. During the 1960s, he received a patent for the hard contact lens. He also held patents for bifocal contact lenses and the rifle scope.

He was a former communicant of St. Agnes' Church.

He was a longtime member of the Wahconah Country Club in Dalton and was also a member of the Dunedin Country Club in Dunedin. He enjoyed woodworking and had shops in both of his homes.

His wife, the former Mary M. Pharmer, whom he married Dec. 29, 1945, in Pittsfield, died Oct. 8, 1986.

He leaves a son, Stephen L. St. Palley Jr. of Indian Orchard; three daughters, Susan L. Gallagher of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Jane M. St. Palley of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and Patricia A. Fried of Carson City, Nev.; a brother, Theodore St. Palley of Arkansas; a sister, Marguerite St. Palley of New York City, five grandchildren and a great-grandson. He also leaves his caregiver, Kathy Sumner of Windsor.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Graveside services for Dr. Stephen L. St. Palley Sr., who died Wednesday, Nov. 17, will be private at his request. Burial will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery with his loving wife Mary and his mother Isabel. There will be no calling hours.

A Celebration of Life for Doc St. Palley will be held this Saturday, Nov. 20, at 3 at the Hard Hat Bar & Grille on Daly Avenue in Dalton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, 890 East Main St., Dalton, which is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. St. Palley leaves his five grandchildren, Amy Fried, Katie Fried, Molly Fried, Terrance Gallagher Jr., and Sean Gallagher, and his great-grandson, Sean "Riley" Gallagher. He also leaves his caregiver, Kathy Sumner, who helped him immensely throughout the past five years.
