Bernard D. "Don" Cook Jr.

Bernard D. "Don" Cook Jr., 82, of 88 Roselyn Drive died Tuesday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Clintonville, Wis., on July 15, 1922, son of Bernard D. Cook Sr. and Edythe Polley Cook, he was a 1940 graduate of West Division High School in Milwaukee. He earned a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Wisconsin in 1952 and did postgraduate work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the late 1970s.

He moved to Pittsfield in 1952 and had lived on Roselyn Drive for 44 years.

An Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he served as a military air traffic controller, serving in the Pacific theater as a pilot.

Mr. Cook was employed by GE as lead mechanical design engineer in the naval ordnance division. He was responsible for the design of military equipment. He retired in 1988 after 35 years of service.

He was a life member of Unitarian Universalist Church, a 15-year member of the board of directors of the departments of Mental Health and Mental Retardation, a six-year volunteer in the technical program at Berkshire Community College and a longtime volunteer for Recording for the Blind.

A volunteer at Hancock Shaker Village, he technically assisted and built the turbine there. Under former Gov. William Weld, he also served as a member of the state Board of Library Commissioners.

He leaves a daughter, Jennet A. Cook of Boston; a sister, Rosemary Perry of the state of Wisconsin, and his former wife, Janet Pearce Cook of Pittsfield.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A celebration of the life of Bernard D. "Don" Cook Jr., who died Tuesday, Nov. 9, will take place after the holidays at the Pittsfield Unitarian Universalist Church. His ashes will be buried in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pittsfield Unitarian Universalist Church in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201, which is in charge of arrangements.
