John E. "Jack" Colby Jr

John E. "Jack" Colby Jr., 82, of 56 Pollock Ave. died Saturday at home after a brief illness.

He had resided in Connecticut and Longmeadow before moving to Pittsfield in 1975.

Born in Lowell on Jan. 28, 1922, son of John E. Colby Sr. and Evelina Leith Colby, he was educated in schools there.

He enlisted in the Navy in 1941 and served as an aviation machinist mate first class. He served at Pearl Harbor and aboard the USS Currituck, and received several ribbons and medals. He was discharged in 1959.

Mr. Colby was employed by Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford, Conn., retiring in 1983 as a supervisor after 40 years in the experimental testing department.

He was a former communicant of Sacred Heart Church and enjoyed woodworking, cabinetry, gardening, dancing and the Red Sox.

His first wife, the former Frances Whitney, died Dec. 29, 1970.

He and his wife, the former Jean E. Bourquard Moran, were married June 2, 1973, at St. Agnes' Church in Dalton.

Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Jayne E. Colby DeAngelis of Cheshire; a son, John "Rick" Colby of Virginia Beach, Va.; a stepdaughter, Julie A. Moran Cain of Whitesboro, N.Y.; two stepsons, James A. Moran and Joseph A. Moran, both of Pittsfield; a sister, Barbara Campbell of Munson; 13 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- John "Jack" "BopBop" Colby Jr., 82, was called safely home on Nov. 13, 2004. Calling hours will be today, Monday, from 4 to 7 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. The funeral will be tomorrow at 10:15 from the funeral home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at Sacred Heart Church celebrated by the Rev. James K. Joyce, pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Bridget's Cemetery in Housatonic. "BopBop" will be remembered always by his son-in-law, Ronald DeAngelis; daughters-in-law, JoAnne Moran and Brenda Almy; his grandchildren, Todd and Derek DeAngelis, Katherine, Michael and Audrey Moran, Diana, Joseph and Chris Colby, Erin Huggins, Michael, Megan and Eileen Cain, and Sabrina Twinning Branchesi, and by his extended family, Patrick Huggins, Stephen Sheldon and Amy Moran; his six angels, Emily and Madison Huggins, Zoé Moran, Alixandrea and Angela Tremont, and Jade Wynter Colby.

He was predeceased by a grandson, a brother and three sisters. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires, c/o the funeral home.
