John Jay Whalen, 41, of Stoneham, formerly of Nancy Avenue in Pittsfield, died Friday at Lemuel Sattuck Hospital in Boston following a long illness.
Born in Pittsfield on Feb. 21, 1963, son of Elisabeth Cristiano Whalen of Pittsfield and the late John Richard Whalen, he was educated in local schools and attended Pittsfield High School.
Mr. Whalen had owned and operated the former Suchele's Bakery in Lenox for a couple years, selling it in late 2003.
He enjoyed the arts and was an actor at the former Berkshire Public Theater.
Besides his mother, he leaves a sister, Maribeth Kelley of Stoneham.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Jay Whalen, who died Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, will be celebrated Friday, Nov. 12, at 11 at Sacred Heart Church, 191 Elm St., Pittsfield, by the Rev. James K. Joyce, pastor.
Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Lee, with the Rev. Daniel Papineau, pastor of St. Mary's Church in Lee, officiating at the grave. Mr. Whalen, who is being remembered as one who lived the adventure of life in spontaneous fashion, is also survived by his brother-in-law, Henry Kelley, a niece and a nephew.
