Ruth L. Mathews, 95, of 40 Pine St. died Monday at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in St. Johnsbury, Vt., on Oct. 25, 1909, daughter of William B. and Maud E. Simpson Mathews, she was a 1927 graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy.
She moved to Wellesley in 1929, residing there for 45 years.
A veteran of the Navy Reserve, she enlisted in August 1944 and served on active duty as a hospital corpsman at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Chelsea during World War II, and at the U.S. General Hospital in Newport, R.I., during the Korean War. She retired in 1971.
Miss Mathews was first employed at the James A. Impey Insurance Agency in St. Johnsbury, then for 11 years as a bookkeeper at the Hathaway House Bookshop in Wellesly. She also was employed at Lahrer and Madden Insurance Inc., Babson Institute, Lee Chevrolet Co. of Wellesley, Wentworth-Jennings Motor Co., Harlow Irmie Corp., Advance Machine Tools of Newton, Pierson Industries and S.M. Spenser Manufacturing Co. of Boston.
She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Rebekah, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, serving in the offices of several of its branches, including Central Past Noble Grand Association 11, Lady Deputies' Association and Patriarch Militant Branch. Her fraternal memberships were in Olive Branch Rebekah Lodge 4 of St. Johnsbury, Alfred S. Pinkerton Rebekah Lodge 205 of Wellesley, Sumner P. Lawrence Rebekah Lodge 17 of Newton and Lucy Webb Hayes Rebekah Lodge 1260 of Springfield.
She was president of the Rebekah Assembly of Massachusetts from 1969 to 1970 and of the Department Association of the Ladies' Auxiliary Patriarch Militant of Massachusetts and Rhode Island from 1977 to 1978. She was a life member of the National and Massachusetts Old Ironsides Unit 17 WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), and American Legion Post 68.
She leaves a cousin, Howard Mckinstry of St. Johnsbury.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Miss Ruth L. Mathews, who died Nov. 8, 2004, will be conducted Friday at 2 at WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Roger Davis, pastor of First United Methodist Church. Calling hours will be from 1 to 2 the day of the service, with a Rebekah service at 1:30.
Burial will be Saturday at 11 in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in St. Johnsbury, Vt. Donations in her memory may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, the American Diabetes Association or the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in care of the funeral home, 220 East St., Pittsfield 01201.
Her brother, Kenneth F. Mathews, with whom she had resided, died March 16, 2003.
