Joseph Francis Crippa, 85, of Berkshire Town Apartments died Monday at Springside of Pittsfield, where he had resided since September 2002.
Born in Williamstown on Aug. 26, 1919, son of Rudolph and Frieda Racicot Crippa, he attended schools in Cheshire and Adams and was a 1936 graduate of the former Adams High School.
He was a longtime resident of Adams.
A decorated Army veteran of World War II, he served from 1941 to 1945, participating in the invasion of Cebu, Philippines. While stationed in Cebu, he received a Bronze Star for meritorious service for building a radio station from spare parts and was chief engineer for WVAD, the Voice of America Division.
Mr. Crippa was employed by GE as an electronics technician in the ordnance department for many years, retiring in 1982. At one time, he also worked at Molleur Brothers and Pittsfield Radio.
He was a piano player for several area bands, including the Castaways, and the Don Weston, Bill Lawson and Pete DeMeo orchestras. He was also a ham radio operator, building his radio from scratch.
He was a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' clubs and enjoyed hiking Mount Greylock and fishing.
He and his wife, the former Jackie Walker Rivers, were married Nov. 11, 1978, in Dalton.
Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Kathryn D. Qua of Claverack, N.Y.; a stepson, Mark D. "Sparky" Rivers of Pittsfield, six grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Joseph Francis Crippa, who died Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, leaves his six grandchildren, Kris M. Qua, Kacy L. Qua, Kelsiy A. Qua, Brandon M. Rivers, Ilea M. Rivers, Alecia A. Rivers, and his great-granddaughter, Jade S. Qua, as well as his daughter-in-law, Sally A. Rivers, his son-in-law, Dan P. Qua, and his granddaughter-in-law, Jen Qua.
At Mr. Crippa's request, there will be no calling hours. Following cremation, a private memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Crippa may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield 01201.
