Ruth E. Sisman

Ruth E. Sisman, 92, formerly of 106 East Housatonic St., died Friday at Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility, where she had resided for three years.
Born in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 2, 1912, daughter of John H. and Emma Kreidler Sisman, she was a 1930 graduate of Pittsfield High School and a 1932 graduate of the former Berkshire Business School.
She also took courses from the national and Massachusetts assessors' associations.
Miss Sisman was employed in the Pittsfield assessor's office for 41 years, retiring in 1975. Hired as a part-time clerk, she rose through the ranks, becoming administrative assistant to the city assessor for several years and, in 1963, chairman of the Board of Assessors, only the second woman to hold the post. In 1962, she became the first woman president of the Berkshire County Assessors Association.
She was a member of First Church of Christ, Congregational, and a former member of its diaconate. She volunteered for several years with the Berkshire Athenaeum's former music and arts department, and for many years in the gift shop of the former Pittsfield General Hospital and in the development office of its successor, Berkshire Medical Center.
She was the recipient of BMC's Gladys Allen Brigham Award for volunteerism in 1982, and was honored in 1994 for having volunteered more than 10,000 hours total to the hospital.
She also volunteered with the former Central Berkshire Chamber of Commerce, which named her an Outstanding Chamber Volunteer in 1997.
She served on the board of the Visiting Nurse Association of the Berkshires.
She enjoyed knitting, sewing and gardening. In her youth, she enjoyed skiing and other outdoor sports.
She leaves several cousins.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Graveside services for Miss Ruth E. Sisman, who died Nov. 5, 2004, will be conducted Wednesday, Nov. 10, at 11 in Pittsfield Cemetery by the Rev. Meredith Handspicker. Friends are asked to meet inside the cemetery gates at 10:45 that morning. There will be no calling hours.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Berkshire Athenaeum or to Berkshire Medical Center in care of WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield 01201. Miss Sisman was predeceased by her sister, Catherine E. Sisman, in 1974.
