Melissa Anne Smith

Melissa Anne Smith, 45, of 252 Madden Road, Stephentown, N.Y., a former resident of Pittsfield and of Petersburgh, N.Y., died Saturday, Oct. 30, at Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident in Petersburgh.

Born in Pittsfield on Aug. 24, 1959, daughter of Mary Sherman Ruffner Murphy of Pittsfield and the late William Ruffner, she attended Taconic High School.

At the time of her death, Mrs. Smith was employed by Taconic Plastics in Petersburgh as an inspector, a position she had held for three years.

She also worked at Zema's Nursery in Stephentown and, for the past four years, was a waitress at Jiminy Peak Resort's Founders Grill. Earlier, she worked as a waitress in Pittsfield-area restaurants for several years.

She was a former member of the Pittsfield Animal Control Board and a volunteer at her children's schools and sporting events.

She enjoyed outdoor activities, including walking and hiking, and gardening.

Besides her mother, of Pittsfield, she leaves two daughters, Shannon M. Smith of Pittsfield and Beth R. Smith of Stephentown; two brothers, Robert Ruffner and William Ruffner, both of Pennsylvania; a granddaughter; her former husband, Steven E. Smith of Canaan, N.Y., and her companion, David J. Power of Petersburgh.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Melissa Anne Smith, who died Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, will be conducted Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at 1 at DERY FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Linda M. Shaw, pastor of Morningside Baptist Church.

Following cremation, burial will take place at a later date. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield. Melissa also leaves her granddaughter, Emma R. Smith.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mrs. Smith may be made to the Beth Smith Scholarship Fund, to establish an educational scholarship fund for her daughter, in care of the funeral home.
