Peter Lavelle, 90, formerly of 101 Somerset Ave., died Friday at Hopewell House Hospice in Portland, Ore.
Born in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England, on June 24, 1914, son of Patrick and Nora Devlin Lavelle, he was educated in County Mayo, Ireland, and settled in New York City in 1932.
He moved to the Berkshires in 1952 and to Portland in 2002.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the Panama Canal Zone and later as a medic in France.
Mr. Lavelle was employed for 27 years as a tester by GE, retiring in May 1979.
He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, where he led the rosary for many years.
He was a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' clubs and enjoyed listening to the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood, attending other cultural events in the Berkshires, and traveling.
He traveled to Connemara, Ireland, in June to celebrate his birthday with family there.
His wife, the former Mary Theresa Conneely, whom he married April 19, 1947, died Nov. 27, 1993.
He leaves a daughter, Mary B. Lavelle of Portland.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Peter Lavelle, 90, was called safely home Oct. 15, 2004. The funeral service will be held Friday at 9 from DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Mary the Morningstar Church at 10 by the Rev. Paul Bombardier, pastor.
Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 to 7. Besides his daughter, he is survived by nieces and nephews in Boston, Ireland, London and Long Island and many faithful friends. Peter enjoyed life to the fullest up to his last moments. His gentleness and kindness touched everyone he met.
In lieu of flowers, Mr. Lavelle had requested that a rosary be said in his memory.
