Vito R. Puyia Jr., 77, formerly of 120 Onota St., died yesterday at Hillcrest Commons, where he had resided since September.
Born in Italy on Sept. 1, 1927, son of Vito Puyia Sr. and Filomena Teti Puyia, he came to the United States as a child with his family and resided in the Bronx, N.Y., where he graduated from Roosevelt High School.
He moved to Pittsfield and was employed by the city of Pittsfield in the sanitation department for 26 years, retiring in 1981.
Mr. Puyia was a communicant of Mount Carmel Church.
A member of the Italian-American Club of Pittsfield, he was a participant in many bocce tournaments.
He also enjoyed gardening and playing cards.
He leaves a daughter, Filomena J. Puyia of Pittsfield; a son, Anthony V. Puyia of Brigantine, N.J., and his former wife, Antonia Morin of Adams.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Vito R. Puyia Jr. will be celebrated Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, at 10 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church with the Rev. Charles Dolan, C.S.S., officiating.
Burial will follow in the family plot at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 8:30 to 9:30 at the FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St.
Survivors include two nephews, Louis J. Puyia and Vito F. Puyia of Pittsfield, and nieces and nephews in Italy; a sister-in-law, Fleurette Puyia of Pittsfield; former wife, Antonia Morin of Adams. He was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph Puyia and Vincenzo Puyia.
