Michael John Ryan

Michael John Ryan, 60, of 86 Appletree Lane died Monday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.

Born in Pittsfield on Feb. 13, 1944, son of Rosemary A. Ford Ryan of Pittsfield and the late Clinton J. Ryan, he was a 1962 graduate of St. Joseph's High School, where he was co-captain of the football team and won four football letters and three baseball letters.

He was named to the All-Berkshire football team three times and was twice named to the All-Western Massachusetts team. He was the recipient of the O'Boyle-Greenleaf Award for scholarship and leadership.

Mr. Ryan graduated from Berkshire Community College in 1969 as salutatorian of his class and graduated with honors from Purdue University-Fort Wayne campus, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering.

An Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War, he served from Sept. 18, 1963, to Aug. 25, 1967, when he was discharged with the rank of sergeant. During his tour, he graduated from a 35-week ground radio repairman's training course at Keesler Technical Training Center in Biloxi, Miss., and then served as a communications electronics technician both in the states and in Vietnam.

Mr. Ryan was employed as an electrical engineer with General Electric ordnance systems division from 1973 to 2001, when he retired.

He was a communicant of St. Agnes' Church and a member of the American Legion Post 155 in Dalton.

An avid outdoorsman and sports enthusiast, he enjoyed running, hiking and biking. He also enjoyed woodworking, reading and problem solving.

He and his wife, the former Janet E. Dumas, were married June 8, 1968, in Schenectady, N.Y.

Besides his mother and his wife, he leaves a son, Thomas M. Ryan of Windsor, Conn.; a daughter, Jennifer Ryan Archambault of Pepperell; a brother, Dennis P. Ryan of Manchester, N.H.; two sisters, Judith A. Bercury of Pittsfield and Patricia J. Pero of Dalton, and a grandson.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Michael John Ryan, who died Monday, Oct. 11, is also survived by his son-in-law, Michael F. Archambault Sr.; his daughter-in-law, Katherine A. Ryan; his grandson, Michael Frank Archambault Jr., and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Friday, Oct. 15, at 10:15 at the DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at St. Agnes Church, celebrated by the Rev. Christopher A. Malatesta, pastor.

Burial will follow in Ashuelot Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joseph Central High School for the Mike Ryan Scholarship for worthy student athletes in care of the funeral home, 890 East Main St., Dalton, MA 01226.
