Alice Gertrude Sullivan, 80, of 6 Baver Drive, Salisbury Estates, died Tuesday at home.
Born in Pittsfield on March 5, 1924, daughter of Patrick and Alice Ferry Prendergast, she was a 1942 graduate of Pittsfield High School. She earned her bachelor's degree in education in 1946 from the former Our Lady of the Elms College in Chicopee.
She resided in Swampscott for 40 years before moving to Pittsfield 11 years ago.
Mrs. Sullivan taught fourth and sixth grades for 21 years at Machon Elementary School in Swampscott, retiring in 1986.
She was a communicant of St. Teresa's Church and a member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association. An avid reader, she enjoyed solving crossword puzzles in The Boston Globe and The New York Times, and playing bridge.
She also enjoyed traveling, especially to Florida.
Her husband, Edward F. Sullivan, whom she married June 28, 1947, in St. Teresa's Church, died Dec. 4, 1987.
She leaves two daughters, Kerry A. Sullivan of Nahant and Sheila E. Sullivan of Swampscott; two sisters, Helen Brundage of Williamstown and Dorothy A. Goggins of Pittsfield, and a grandson.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Alice Gertrude Sullivan, who died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, will be celebrated tomorrow, Oct. 8, at 11 at St. Teresa's Church, 290 South St., by the Rev. John J. Varley, pastor.
Burial will Tuesday, Oct. 12, at noon in Swampscott Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hillcrest Educational Centers Inc., in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Richard Prendergast and Robert "Bees" Prendergast. She leaves her grandson, Ryan E. Sullivan of Swampscott. She was a devoted grandmother.
