Albert Tavares, 83, of Manchester, Conn., died yesterday at the Haven Health Center of East Hartford in Connecticut.
Born in Pittsfield on July 23, 1921, son of Jose and Maria do Cormo Mendes, he was raised in Lisbon, Portugal, and was educated there. He returned to the United States in 1941.
He graduated from the former Berkshire Business College in Pittsfield.
A Navy veteran of World War II, he was stationed in Rio de Janeiro in the Naval Attaché office.
Mr. Tavares had been employed as a banker for the former Berkshire Bank & Trust for more than 40 years.
He retired in 1983 and moved to Cape Cod.
He was a communicant of St. Bridget Church in Manchester. He was a member of the Manchester Senior Citizens, where he was an avid pinochle player. He was also a Red Sox fan.
While in Pittsfield, he was a member of the Portugese-American Club.
His wife, the former Diolinda Monteiro, is deceased.
He leaves a daughter, Beverly A. Tavares of Manchester, with whom he resided, and his adopted grandson.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Albert Tavares will be Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, at 10:15 from the WATKINS FUNERAL HOME, 142 East Center St., Manchester, Conn., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at St. Bridget Church, 80 Main St.
Burial of his cremains will be Thursday, Oct. 14, at 11 in Section 17 of the St. Joseph's Cemetery, Pittsfield. Calling hours will be Sunday from 2 to 5 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Francis Home Care & Hospice, 95 Woodland St., Hartford, CT 06040.
He leaves his adopted grandson, Matthew E. Chapa of Manchester, and a niece, Teresa Beard of Greer, S.C. He was predeceased by a sister, Lourdes Coelho.
