Rhoda Rubin, 71, of Pine Grove Drive died Friday at Berkshire Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on May 29, 1933, daughter of Irving and Lillian Tennenbaum Goldenberg, she was a 1950 graduate of Ellenville (N.Y.) High School and a 1953 graduate of Union University School of Nursing in Albany, N.Y. At age 16, she was accepted at Cornell University as a veterinary student.
She moved to Pittsfield in 1953.
Mrs. Rubin was employed by the Pittsfield Health Department as a school and public health nurse for more than 28 years. She had also worked as a registered nurse at the former Hillcrest Hospital for more than 30 years. She retired in 1995, but continued substituting until the time of her death.
She was a member of Temple Anshe Amunim, the Massachusetts Nurses Association and the Senior Bowling League, and a former member of B'nai B'rith. She enjoyed gardening and volunteered at Springside Park.
She was awarded the Pittsfield Gazette's Most Valuable Pittsfielder in 1993 and the Berkshire County Guidance Association Award for Contributions at Reid Middle School in 1990.
She was also recognized by the Pittsfield Splendid 100 in 1986. She enjoyed visiting nursing homes with her dog, Zippy, and giving care to anyone in need.
Her longtime companion, Emanuel Brown, died in February 1999.
She leaves two sons, Ronald L. Rubin of Bend, Ore., and Lane H. Rubin of Santa Barbara, Calif.; a daughter, Debbie E. Rubin of Golden, Colo.; a brother, Marvin Goldenberg of Ellenville, and her former husband, Jerrold A. Rubin of Largo, Fla.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Rhoda Goldenberg Rubin, 71, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004. The funeral and burial will be today, Sept. 19, at 3 in the Anshe Amunim section of Pittsfield Cemetery. Services will be officiated by Barbara Cohen, spiritual leader of Temple Anshe Amunim. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society, the charity of one's choice or the Rhoda Rubin Nursing Scholarship Fund to be established in her memory, all in care of DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
Rhoda spent her final hours with her three children, beloved dog, Zippy, and many wonderful friends by her side. She touched the lives of many children and families, extending her care beyond the normal workday. Rhoda is also survived by her nieces, Adrian Kossar and Lynn Kaplan; cousins Jerry and Sylvia Silverberg and Diane and Jackie Cooper.
She was predeceased by her relatives, Ed and June Rubin, Eli and Molly Cooper, and her stepmother, Bessie Goldenberg. She also leaves her faithful dog, Zippy.
