Richard J. Ryan

Richard J. Ryan, 90, a native of Pittsfield, died Sunday at Newfield House nursing home in Plymouth following a short illness.

Born April 8, 1914, son of John and Susan Quinn Ryan, he graduated from Pittsfield High School and from Bentley School of Accounting and Finance in Boston.

He moved to Sandwich in 1986 and to Plymouth in 2003.

An Army veteran of World War II, he served in Normandy, France, the Rhineland, Central Europe and England from 1943 to 1945 with Battery B, 776th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion as a sergeant.

Mr. Ryan was employed as an accountant by GE Plastics until his retirement in 1974.

An avid golfer, he played into his 80s, recording two holes in one.

He also accompanied the U.S. Olympic Team to the 1936 Munich games as an assistant to the swim team.

His wife of 55 years, the former Helen Cranston, died Sept. 24, 1996.

He leaves two sons, John R. Ryan of Plymouth and Richard C. Ryan of Carver; five grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Richard J. Ryan, 90, died Aug. 15, 2004. The funeral will be Thursday at 10:15 from DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 11 at Sacred Heart Church by the Rev. James K. Joyce, pastor.

Burial will follow in Berlin Community Center Cemetery, Berlin, N.Y. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Pittsfield Boys' and Girls' Club in care of the funeral home, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield 01201.
