Theodore J. Mezejewski Sr

Theodore J. Mezejewski Sr., 80, of 2706 5th Court, Palm Harbor, Fla., died Thursday at Helen Ellis Hospital in Tarpon Springs, Fla.
He was the football, basketball and baseball coach at St. Joseph's High School from 1950 to 1960 and taught social studies at the former North Junior High School during the same period.
Born in Pittsfield on Oct. 11, 1923, son of John and Rose Dobronski Mezejewski, he was a 1942 graduate of Pittsfield High School, where he was a three-sport star, winning All-Berkshire honors in basketball and football.
He also attended St. Bonaventure College for a year and graduated from Providence College in Rhode Island and Montclair State University in New Jersey.
An Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, he was the tail-gunner on a B-24 Liberator that crashed in Nebraska in 1944. He sustained only injuries while several men died. He was discharged as a sergeant.
Before retiring in 1985, Mr. Mezejewski was vice principal of Hasbrouck Heights (N.J.) High School for 25 years and a coach.
While in Pittsfield, he led his 1957 and 1958 St. Joe teams to Berkshire County football championships. He was inducted into the Western Massachusetts Football Coaches Hall of Fame, the Monday Morning Quarterback Club Hall of Fame, and the Pittsfield Hoop Club Hall of Fame as a player and a coach.
In Palm Harbor, he was a communicant of St. Luke's Church and a member of the Clearwater American Legion.
His first wife, the former Elizabeth Hannon, died Sept. 5, 1982.
He leaves his wife, the former Marion Stellmann; a son, Theodore J. Mezejewski Jr. of Vernon, N.J.; two daughters, Mary Caffrey of Upper Grandview, N.Y., and Nancy Dubicki of Hasbrouck Heights; a stepson, Scott Brocker of Lake Hiawatha, N.J., and nine grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Theodore J. Mezejewski Sr., 80, died in Palm Harbor, Fla., on Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, Aug. 19, at 11 at St. Charles' Church by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Mr. Mezejewski was predeceased by a brother, Richard H. Mezejewski Sr. in 2001.
He also leaves his daughter-in-law, Diane Mezejewski; son-in-law, Frank Dubicki, and his daughter Mary's fiancé, Joe Sapienza. DWYER FUNERAL HOME is in charge of local arrangements.
