Madelyn T. Harte

Madelyn T. Harte, 73, of 108 Somerset Ave. died yesterday morning at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Pittsfield on Oct. 5, 1930, daughter of William J. and Elizabeth H. Curtain Harte, she was a 1948 graduate of St. Joseph's High School.

She earned a bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry from Our Lady of the Elms College in 1952 and a master's degree in education from the former North Adams State College, now Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, in 1963.

A teacher, Ms. Harte taught in the Pittsfield Public Schools system at the former Pomeroy, Bartlett and Highland schools. In 1981, she taught at Herberg Middle School, retiring in 1990 after 31 years of service. Before teaching, she had worked in the biochemistry lab at Boston City Hospital and in the lab at the former Pittsfield General Hospital.

She was a communicant of St. Mary's and St. Charles' churches.

She was a member of the Massachusetts Teachers Retirement Board and the Massachusetts Teachers Association.

She enjoyed music, reading, doing crossword puzzles, gardening, golf and traveling.

She leaves a brother, William P. Harte of Norristown, Pa.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Madelyn T. Harte, longtime Pittsfield educator, died in Pittsfield on Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004. Funeral services will be Monday, Aug. 16, at 9:15 from the DWYER FUNERAL HOME with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Charles Church, celebrated by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday, Aug. 15, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or to the Jimmy Fund in care of the funeral home.

Miss Harte was predeceased by a brother, John Harte, and three sisters, Rosemary Harte, Gertrude Brennan and Elizabeth O'Gara. She leaves 18 nieces and nephews and 25 great-nieces and nephews.
