Joseph Paul Borletto

Joseph Paul Borletto, 79, of 381 Dalton Ave., who founded and managed the Tyler Aces AA baseball team, died yesterday morning at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Pittsfield on Sept. 21, 1924, son of Matteo and Concetta "Goldie" Russo Borletto, he was educated in Pittsfield schools. He was a lifelong resident of Pittsfield and had lived on Dalton Avenue since 1966.
Mr. Borletto was employed in the power transformer department at GE for 37 years, retiring in 1984.
A well-known athlete of his day, Mr. Borletto was the founder/ manager and president of the Tyler Aces baseball team for 20 years. In the 1940s, he ran amateur teams in baseball, basketball, hockey and football that won many championships.
In the 1950s, the Aces became semi-pro. The Aces participated in the National Baseball Congress tournament in Wichita, Kan., with teams from all over the world and were beaten by a team from Army, 2-1, whose pitcher was future Major Leaguer Art Ditmar from Pittsfield. They also participated in four American Baseball Congress tournaments in Battle Creek, Mich., finishing twice in the semifinals.
The team won the ABC championship in New York state with a 26-1 record. They also won titles in Connecticut and Massachusetts as well as the Pittsfield City League and Berkshire County League.
His football team, called the Pittsfield Darlings, played at Wahconah Park every Sunday before large crowds.
Mr. Borletto was the recipient of the Bruno Award from the Benedict Athletic Club given by the late U.S. Rep. Silvio O. Conte.
He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and a member of its Family Society. He was also a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners clubs.
Mr. Borletto was a N.Y. Yankees fan and enjoyed gardening and the outdoors.
He leaves his wife, the former Mary A. Gillette, whom he married Nov. 16, 1946, in St. Mary Church; a daughter, Carol A. McGovern of Pittsfield; a sister, Angelina Grant of Colchester, Conn.; two grandsons, and a great-granddaughter.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Joseph Paul Borletto, who died Friday, Aug. 6, will be held Monday, Aug. 9, at 9:15 a.m. from DERY FUNERAL HOME with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Mary the Morning Star Church celebrated by the Rev. Paul A. Bombardier, pastor.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Sunday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Borletto may be made to the Pittsfield Boys' and Girls' Club or to the American Heart Association in care of the funeral home.
Mr. Borletto also leaves his son-in-law, William A. McGovern Sr. of Pittsfield; two grandsons, William A. McGovern Jr. of Pittsfield and Joseph W. McGovern of Westfield; a great-granddaughter, Ryleigh A. McGovern of Westfield, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Matteo J. Borletto of Pittsfield on Oct. 12, 1994.
