Richard P. Schmidt

Richard P. Schmidt, 73, of 18 Broadway died Saturday afternoon at home.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Sept. 7, 1930, son of Lloyd and Hilda Brown Schmidt, he was a graduate of Erasmus Hall High School and Brooklyn College.

An Army veteran, he served in radar operations during the Korean War.

Mr. Schmidt worked in retail at an upscale clothing store in New York City.

A gardener, he volunteered with Pittsfield Beautiful and its garden tour committee, and his own garden had been featured in its recent "Pittsfield's Hidden Heart" tour.

After retiring, he became a member of the Friends of Pontoosuc Lake, Friends of the Colonial Theatre and Friends of the Lanesboro Library, and volunteered at Hancock Shaker Village.

He and his wife, the former Joy L. Nelson, were married June 16, 1957.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Andrew Schmidt of Windsor; a daughter, Kristie Schmidt of Mystic, Conn., and a sister, Sue McTighe of Albuquerque, N.M.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Mr. Richard P. Schmidt, who died Aug. 7, 2004, will be conducted Wednesday, Aug. 11, at 11 at WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Charles Young, chaplain of HospiceCare in the Berkshires. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4 to 7.

Burial will be in Pittsfield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions honoring Mr. Schmidt's life may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.

He also leaves a daughter-in-law, Trisha Schmidt of Windsor, seven cousins and six nieces. He loved children and was known for his great sense of humor.
