Robert W. Sykes

Robert W. Sykes, 83, of 43 Taylor St. died yesterday morning at home following a long illness.
Born in Pittsfield on Oct. 13, 1920, son of Hubert C. and Alice S. Harlow Sykes, he was a 1938 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
A decorated Army veteran of World War II, he served from 1942 until 1946 as a private first class with Battery B, 7th Anti-aircraft Artillery Battalion in the southern Philippines and Ryukyu Islands.
Mr. Sykes was employed by GE in the power transformer department for 15 years, retiring in 1983. Following his retirement, he worked at Miss Hall's School until 2001.
He had earlier worked at Crane & Co. at the Byron Weston Mill in Dalton.
He was a communicant of St. Teresa's Church.
He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed woodworking and carpentry.
He and his wife, the former Alice O'Donnell, were married Oct. 12, 1942, in St. Joseph's Church.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Robert Sykes and Stephen Sykes, both of Pittsfield; a sister, Jane Bradley of Pittsfield, and four grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Robert W. Sykes, age 83, died July 27, 2004. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 to 7 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. The funeral will be Friday at 10:15 from the funeral home, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 11 at St. Teresa's Church by the Rev. John Varley, pastor.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or St. Teresa's Church in care of the funeral home.
He is lovingly survived by his grandchildren, Scott Sykes, Kristin Perna, Matthew Sykes and Jacquelyn Sykes, his daughter-in-law, Marie Sykes, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, David Sykes.
