Charles R. Van Alstyne

Charles R. Van Alstyne, 68, of Holmes Road died Saturday morning at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Great Barrington on July 9, 1936, son of Sears R. and Mary Una Barnes Van Alstyne, he attended Lenox schools.
He served in the Marine Corps as a communications specialist from 1954 to 1957.
Mr. Van Alstyne made his home in Lenox for many years and had resided in Colonie, N.Y., from 1971 until moving to Pittsfield in 2001.
He was employed by Bay State Elevator Co. for 30 years as a construction supervisor, working in Berkshire County and Albany, N.Y. He retired in 1995.
He was a member of the Colonie Elks Lodge for many years and coached the Colonie Girls' Softball League. He enjoyed playing golf and attended family annual golf outings for 40 years.
He also enjoyed dancing and carpentry.
He and his wife, the former Eleanor Cox, were married April 20, 1956, in Richlands, N.C.
Besides his wife, he leaves four daughters, Constance V. LaBarge of Rochester Hills, Mich., Wendy Marie White of Winchester, Va., Michelle L. Mooney of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Tracey Ann DeMarco of Jacksonville, Fla.; five sisters, Miriam Smith of Raleigh, N.C., Phyllis Miller of Lenox Dale, Patricia Plue and Beverly Krol, both of Pittsfield, and Susan Halpin of Lenox; three brothers, Wesley Van Alstyne of Sun City, Ariz., Thomas Van Alstyne of Lenox Dale and David Van Alstyne of Lenox, and nine grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Charles Roy Van Alstyne will be conducted Tuesday at 10 at the Church on the Hill in Lenox by the Rev. Natalie Shiras, pastor.
Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Lenox. Calling hours will be today from 4 to 8 at ROCHE FUNERAL HOME. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations in his memory to Northwestern University. All donations will be used to support research of the Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer's Disease Center there.
Charles Van Alstyne is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Tyler and Joshua LaBarge, Sarah and Kelly White, Michael, Peter and Marcus Mooney, and Danielle and Micaela DeMarco, and his sons-in-law, Benjamin White, Peter Mooney and Brian DeMarco. His brother, Sears Roy Van Alstyne Jr., died March 13, 2004. Charles was a good friend with boundless energy, a cherished husband, father and grandfather. He was a positive thinker and started the day with a smile and a tune ... a legacy left to his family.
He was a wonderful dancer, a true gentleman, a good athlete and a respected role model. He will be missed, but surely not forgotten. ... He tucked many good memories in many pockets.
