Catherine M. Andersen

Catherine M. Andersen, 84, of 140 Melbourne Road, Epoch Assisted Living, died Wednesday at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center in Lenox, where she had resided for a short time.

Born in Westfield on Jan. 27, 1920, daughter of Patrick and Bridget Griffin Crean, she was a 1938 graduate of St. Mary's School there and a 1942 graduate of Westfield State College.

She had lived in Pittsfield and in Falmouth, returning to Pittsfield three years ago.

An educator, Mrs. Andersen taught in middle and high schools in Pittsfield, Peru, Auburn and Westfield for more than 40 years, retiring from Pittsfield High School in 1978. She had also been a principal in Granville.

She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church. While in Falmouth, she was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church and a member of its Women's Guild.

She was active in the Senior Center and volunteered with the Chamber of Commerce. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma.

She enjoyed traveling, bird watching, bowling, knitting and sewing.

Her husband, Harold F. Andersen, died in March 1987. They had been married 43 years.

She leaves four sons, James Andersen and David Andersen, both of Pittsfield, and Neil Andersen and Edward Andersen, both of Falmouth; two daughters, Kathleen Arth of Falmouth and Ellen Erhard of Marstons Mills, and 16 grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Funeral Mass for Catherine Crean Andersen will be celebrated Monday, July 19, at noon at St. Patrick's Church, Main Street, Falmouth.

Burial will follow in the VA National Cemetery of Massachusetts in Bourne. A visiting hour will be held Monday from 10:30 to 11:30 at CHAPMAN, COLE & GLEASON FUNERAL HOME, 475 Main St., Route 28, Falmouth Center.
