Frank A. Rice

Frank A. Rice, 83, formerly of Devonshire Estates, died yesterday in Suffield, Conn., at his home after a long illness.

Born in New York City on Oct. 17, 1920, son of James and Anna Cummins Rice, he was educated in New York City Schools and graduated from high school in 1938. He then attended St. John's University where he studied management.

He enlisted in the Army during World War II, where he served in the infantry, and was honorably discharged as a captain.

He was last employed at Brampton Textiles in New York as an importer for several years before retiring as an owner of the firm in 1983. Before then he worked for several New York textile companies as an importer, from 1946 until 1978, mainly in men's clothing.

Following his retirement, he moved to Myrtle Beach, S.C., with his wife and spent 10 years there, where he enjoyed golfing and took up woodworking as a hobby, which he enjoyed for 25 years.

He and his wife traveled extensively.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus on Long Island and a member of the American Legion in Lenox.

He leaves his wife of 53 years, the former Mary E. Connolly, whom he married in 1951 in Sacred Heart Church in Pittsfield; a son, Robert Rice of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; a daughter, Mary Ellen Staley of Enfield, Conn.; a brother, James Rice of Hilton Head, S.C., and a sister, Rita Zeman of Montrose, Colo. A son, John F. Rice, died Oct. 16, 1990.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral service for Frank A. Rice, 83, who died July 9, 2004, will be Monday at 10 from DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at Sacred Heart Church, officiated by the Rev. C. J. Waitkus.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Callinf hours will be sunday from 4 to 7. He is also survivd by his daughter-in-law, Mary Hendrickson of Saratoga Springs, and many nieces and nephews.
