Robert S. Bristol

Robert S. Bristol, 80, of 6 Atlantic Ave. died Wednesday at Springside Nursing Home.

Born in Rutland, Mass., on Jan. 1, 1924, son of Sheldon R. and Teresa L. Cunningham Bristol, he was educated in Otis and in other schools in South Berkshire.

An Army veteran of World War II, he served with the 78th Quartermaster Training Company.

A self-employed horse trainer, Mr. Bristol worked in the Berkshires for many years and at Green Mountain Race Track for several years. He became a mechanic as a young man and was a stock car racer at Lebanon Valley (N.Y.) Speedway.

He also worked at Dufour Bus Co., the former Nesbit's Garage and Nash Steel, retiring in 1970 because of illness.

His passion was for horse training, but he loved all animals.

He leaves three sons, William D. Bristol and Robert "Skip" Bristol, both of Pittsfield, and Michael Bristol of Lord Fairfax, Va.; four daughters, Nancy L. Henneborn of Catawba, N.C., and Dorothy A. Stroup, Lila M. Catalano and Linda J. Bristol, all of Pittsfield, 29 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren. He also leaves his former wife, Dorothy A. Gavin Bristol. Another daughter, Teresa L. Bristol, died June 23, 1984.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Robert S. Bristol, 80, died Wednesday, July 7, 2004. Private services for family and invited guests will be Monday, July 12, at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME and military honors, at Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam.

In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Pittsfield Homeless Veterans in care of the funeral home.
