Robert M. Phillips, 94, of Kimball Farms retirement community died Saturday at its nursing care center.
Born in New York City on April 15, 1910, he was the son of Jonas and Sophie Konyn Phillips.
He had formerly resided in Mount Vernon, N.Y., for 40 years. He had resided at Kimball Farms for more than a year.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served for three years.Mr. Phillips taught English in the New York City schools for 57 years, retiring as chairman of the English department at William Howard Taft High School.
A committed trade unionist, he had belonged to every teachers' union that evolved in New York City during his time there, including the United Federation of Teachers and the Committee for Supervisory Organizations.
He was a volunteer literacy tutor, chairman of his neighborhood association and was involved in developing low-cost housing. He was an avid reader and public speaker in local affairs.
His leaves his wife of 53 years, the former Anne Chrobersky; a daughter, Deborah Phillips of Great Barrington, a son, Carl Phillips of Watertown, and two grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Robert M. Phillips, 94, formerly of Mount Vernon, N.Y., who died July 3, 2004, will be conducted tomorrow, July 6, at 2:30 at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, Great Barrington, by Rabbi Deborah Zecher, spiritual leader of Hevreh of Southern Berkshire.
In his unique way, he was a "man of all seasons." He was the loving grandfather of Gordon and Jess Wikle. We can honor Bob's memory best by voting Bush out.
